Color Tips

Limit Your Colors

One of pixel art's charms is expressing rich content with limited colors:

  • 4-color challenge: Create with only 4 colors to improve your skills
  • 8-color starter: 8 colors are enough for most works
  • 16-color advanced: 16 colors allow for more subtle transitions

Color Harmony Principles

  1. Primary color: Determine the dominant color, typically 60% of the image
  2. Secondary color: Colors that harmonize with the primary, 30%
  3. Accent color: Used to highlight key points, 10%

Shadows & Highlights

  • Use light and dark variations of the same hue for shading
  • 2-3 levels of light/dark are usually sufficient for pixel art depth
  • Avoid pure black for shadows — try cool or warm dark tones instead
